In this universe of instant-access everything, a well-built routine can be your armour against self-defeating impulse and tedium. See it as a form of personal grooming: taking care of your time, improving its quality, will have the happy side-effect that both your self-image and your efficacy improve.
One useful way to think about your routine is as a gym instructor might think about a training session. The same rules for keeping workouts interesting apply to keeping your day interesting. Planning your schedule, itâs important to factor in moments for spontaneity alongside necessary tasks. Yes it is a paradox, because serendipity is about happy accidents; nevertheless, carving out a dedicated space to be spontaneous means it is likelier to happen. Free time can even be scheduled for the same time slot each day. At school, they used to call it playtime.
Notice when your energy sags: this is your cue to rest or change gear. Bring in contrasts too â vary the tempo, introduce moments of light and shade â and your routine gains depth. Seek out the golden moments in your day. Could there be more of them? Why not? And remember to mix things up periodically to avoid stagnation.
Weed out the things in your habitat that foster your bad habits. List the time thieves that regularly waylay and befuddle you, and examine your working environment with a critical eye. Is it messy or noisy? Is it just too easy to slide online, or raid the biscuit barrel, or to natter to Sue from accounts? Now put obstacles in the way of time wasting. Shut down the WiFi; put the biscuits on a higher shelf; block Sueâs number.
Then clear the path to accomplish what really matters. Simple changes reap dividends. Tidy up. Make your workplace more attractive. Would a cushion help you sit longer? If you work in bursts timed by how long it takes to drink a coffee, invest in a bigger mug.
